The Use of Artificial Intelligence in Cancer Nursing: A Systematic Review

Introduction: The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into nursing has became a focal point of recent innovations in the healthcare sector. Numerous studies are investigating how AI can enhance nursing practices and improve patient outcomes. The aim of this systematic review article is to identify, analyze, and synthesize evidence on the use of AI in the field of cancer nursing.
Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted to identify papers on artificial intelligence (AI) and cancer nursing using relevant key terms. The search spanned citation databases (Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar) and library databases (PubMed and ScienceDirect). This review included studies published in English between 2018 and 2024. Titles and abstracts were initially screened, followed by a full-text review of potentially eligible articles. After applying the eligibility criteria, 19 studies were included. Critical appraisal was performed, and relevant data were extracted and analyzed. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were adhered to throughout the process.
Results: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely explored in various areas of cancer care. AI algorithms were trained and tested using primary and secondary datasets to develop predictive models for cancer-related health issues. Among the 19 selected articles, findings indicated that this approach enhances the accuracy of health outcome predictions and identifies key variables influencing these outcomes. However, while most studies were nurse-led, only a few implemented AI-based digital tools in real-world clinical settings involving oncology nurses. Conclusions: Based on the results, it appears necessary to develop electronic databases for cancer nursing that utilize artificial intelligence tools. Furthermore, it is crucial for oncology nurses to receive additional education in machine learning and natural language processing in order to effectively lead and contribute to AI advancements in the field of oncology.
